Breaking down barriers to learning

All children deserve a good education. But 1 in 3 children globally don’t even receive a quality primary education, and the consequences are far reaching. Children who aren’t in school are at greater risk of exploitation, child marriage, and lower earning potential. For those who are in school, issues like poorly trained teachers, large class sizes and lack of learning materials mean that too many children still cannot read or write.

We address barriers to education and work with communities and local governments to improve access and quality of the education children receive. We also make sure girls and children with disabilities are included. We focus on early years, primary and secondary education as well as helping families to support children’s learning.

Education allows children to realise their full abilities, reach their highest... attainment and grow up with dignity, confidence and self-esteem.

For over 70 years, we've focused on giving girls and boys quality education so they can learn, grow and thrive.

Providing support through additional classes

We support initiatives like the Remedial Education Centre in India – an innovative and community-led centre that teaches reading, writing, math and life skills in free classes for children like Sumit (right). Additionally, where needed we supply resources like textbooks in children's first languages and bring technology innovations to strengthen education programming.

Ensuring equal access to education

With World Vision support, teachers in Albania were trained on Different Ability topics and can now better support children like Aristea, who was born with Down Syndrome. We focus heavily on inclusion in our programmes, ensuring marginalised children are well-equipped to transition into life through fluency in literacy, numeracy and financial and life skills.

Supporting vocational classes for teenagers

Boys like Godfrey from South Sudan benefited from a vocational training programme that includes tailoring, construction and general electricity. He now supports his family as an electrician. We also work to provide other training, such as working with private corporations to get more girls and women to develop their digital literacy skills to improve their employability.

Making sure children can stay in school

We work to keep children in education through community outreach, as well as within schooling itself. Mahima's father attended a World Vision-supported Men Care group. He learnt not to succumb to societal pressure about child marriage and became a strong advocate for girls' rights including the right to education for children like Mahima. We also work to break down other barriers to education for girls like them needing to work to help their families, by supporting the family to earn extra income elsewhere.
