The key to reducing malnutrition is prevention. Solving the root causes of malnutrition such as poverty and lack of access to health care can take several generations.
World Vision South Africa is committed to improving the health and nutrition of women and children in the areas in which we work, and thereby making significant contributions to the reduction of child and maternal mortality.
We concentrate on public health approaches that focus on prevention and promoting the well-being of mothers and children through our community-based support for better health and nutrition. Great emphasis is placed on issues of malnutrition and the prevention of common maternal and childhood infectious diseases.
We recognize that, in order to have a real impact on the well being of children, nutrition must be a key part of our strategy. Adequate and appropriate nutrition is essential for survival, health and the development of individual children as well as the alleviation of poverty in the communities that we work in.
The good news is that there are proven nutrition and health interventions, which can successfully reduce malnutrition rates now, while we continue to work on the longer-term underlying causes.
World Vision South Africa calls for individuals, partners and government ministries to help us expand quality primary care services in our communities, and to support us in front-line health care.
